Agra – The City of the Taj Mahal

Agra, located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world. Known as the City of the Taj Mahal, Agra stands proudly on the banks of the Yamuna River and reflects the grandeur of the Mughal era. It was once the capital of the Mughal Empire and is home to some of the most beautiful architectural wonders ever built. Agra is part of India’s famous Golden Triangle tourist circuit along with Delhi and Jaipur, making it one of the most visited cities in the country. The city is rich in history, culture, art, and Mughal heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into India’s glorious past.

The most iconic monument in Agra is the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Made entirely of white marble, it is a symbol of eternal love and one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture. The sight of the Taj Mahal at sunrise and sunset leaves visitors spellbound. Apart from the Taj, Agra is also home to the magnificent Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site made of red sandstone, which served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Another masterpiece is Fatehpur Sikri, a beautifully preserved city built by Emperor Akbar, located about 40 km from Agra. Other notable attractions include Itmad-ud-Daula’s Tomb, also known as the “Baby Taj,” and Mehtab Bagh, which offers a stunning view of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna River.

Agra is not only famous for its monuments but also for its vibrant culture and delicious cuisine. The city is known for its world-famous Agra Petha, a sweet made from ash gourd, available in different flavors like kesar, angoori, and chocolate. Dal Moth, a spicy snack, is another specialty that locals and tourists love. Street food lovers can enjoy chaat, kachori, and jalebi in the bustling markets of Sadar Bazaar and Kinari Bazaar. Agra is also famous for its marble handicrafts, leather goods, and traditional jewelry.

Every corner of Agra tells a story of love, art, and royalty. With its timeless monuments, rich Mughal heritage, and flavorful food, Agra remains one of India’s most captivating destinations — a place where history and romance come alive through the beauty of the Taj Mahal.
